The Association for Utility Line Design Professionals (UtilityLDPros) is offering a Free 60-minute mini-course to help utility line design professionals recognize the need for improvement in the processes and practices used for overhead electric and communication line design. The webinar leaders will present an overview of proven “best practices” which, with proper application, can result in designs that are safer, more reliable, and in compliance with the requirements of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and professional engineering laws and regulations.
All but a handful of U.S. electric utilities continue to design, construct, operate and maintain overhead distribution lines. Nationwide, overhead lines comprise more than 60% of the electric distribution system. A much higher percentage of transmission lines are overhead. Because they are nearly everywhere, proper engineering design of overhead lines is essential to public and employee safety, as well as to reliable and cost-effective system operation and maintenance.
Overhead utility line design is an engineering discipline that requires the consistent and proper application of engineering principles and ethics to prepare quality designs and reduce liability exposure. This webinar will present an overview of legal, regulatory and ethical requirements applicable to the professional practice of overhead electric line design, including attachments of communication cables and equipment.

Who Should Participate:
This course is intended for electric and communication utility managers, staff engineers, consulting engineers, design/staking technicians, safety/regulatory professionals, and field personnel who are responsible for, or who make decisions concerning, distribution systems. It is conducted at a practical level and is appropriate for degreed engineers and engineering technicians, as well as non-degreed high school graduates with a general knowledge of the electric utility system.
Ted Dimberio, P.E. has 40 years of experience in distribution line design and has worked for rural electric cooperatives and consulting firms. He is currently a private business owner, President and CFO of Utility Line Design and President of Line Design University. He has worked in all capacities of distribution line design that include field staking, supervision, management, and consulting. Ted has a vision to enhance distribution line design by incorporating engineering software, best practice and engineering ethics.
R. John Miner, P.E. is an accomplished executive manager, engineer, educator and consultant with over 45 years of experience in the utility industry. He is President and owner of Collaboration Unlimited and Collaborative Learning, Inc. since 1995 and has worked as a management consultant since 1987, providing services to clients in the electric, water, wastewater and communications utility industries. He lives and works out of Austin, Texas and Cedar, Michigan.
